Friday the 13th saw about 30 or so members of Emmanuel gather at the Mount Cootha Botanic Gardens for Stations of the Cross, as it was Good Friday 2001. No one knew exactly what was going to follow as each station had been prepared by a different individual, resulting in insightful reflections each with a unique flavour. From singing songs to presenting dramas, from reading poems to sharing rather personally, many forms were used to help depict, and reflect upon, this time in Jesus' life.
Everyone had the opportunity to help carry the cross (which travelled with us from station to station) at some stage, and indeed was an ever-present reminder of both Jesus' struggle before his death and the reason why He suffered. The sight of the cross and our group following it turned the heads of many people who were in the gardens at the time. Their reactions varied, but I believe it was a great opportunity to witness to them, especially those individuals of the public who decided to join us on our 'journey'.
All who came to the Stations of the Cross seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience, with many expressing that these were the best Stations that they had ever been to. Thanks must therefore go to Luke and the rest of the E-Team for the organisation of it, and to the various individuals who accepted the invitation to prepare different stations. It truly was a day that will be remembered by most for a long time to come.
On Easter Sunday, various members of Emmanuel gathered at the E-Team residence for a Praise and Worship Night. In front of the cross we sang songs of worship and gave thanks for the awesomeness of God's love; aware that He sent His Son to die for us and that He rose so that we too may have life.
In speaking to others afterwards, it was apparent that each felt the power of God in a different way, but that He was definitely tangibly present that night.
As we know (but sometimes forget?) the Holy Spirit can be very powerful. It was shared that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is alive in each and every one of us - truly an awesome thought, that we, if we just say 'yes', have His power in us, power to move mountains and make a difference here on Earth.
It was an emotional night for most, with many people being slain in the Spirit too. I think the last count was that seven individuals were touched in this way.
Powerful, emotional, encouraging and inspiring - I think these words summarise a truly fantastic night in His presence.
